Hudson Valley Publishing Internship

In the summer of 2009, I interned part time (in addition to interning for Senator Larkin) for Exciting Read Publishing, a company in the Hudson Valley that publishes local magazines, newsletters and books. The majority of my work was in assisting with the publication of Hudson Valley Parent and Hudson Valley Life magazines. However, I was also involved with the marketing of a new children’s book, as well as launching a new “Baby and Me” newsletter.

Some of my duties as an intern included conducting phone interviews for the magazines and newsletter. I interviewed people ranging from  local midwives to local small business owners. Everything about these publications are kept local to the Hudson Valley, including sources. This was an important part of the mission of the company.

Another one of my jobs as intern was to search through the local tourism sites in order to find events appropriate for the demographics of Hudson Valley Parent and Hudson Valley Life readers. I would then publish these events onto our master calendars which were featured both on the magazines’ respective websites as well as the print magazines.

When I began interning for the Professional Image, the company had recently began publishing a children’s book series in addition to the magazines. I helped to market the book series “The Undercover Kids” by working booths at local events such as the Fourth of July Hudson River Festival.

Recommendation from (former) Editorial Assistant Bridget Schultz: “I had the honor of working with Andrea during her time as an intern with Hudson Valley Parent and Hudson Valley Life magazines. As an intern, Andrea was very detailed orientated with her assignments, punctual and a hard worker. She often went out of her way to help out others around the office and went above and beyond her job duties. For example, she worked on weekends to help the publisher with various special events. Andrea is incredibly bright, friendly and would make an excellent addition to any team.”
